Some examples of non destructive testing (NDT) are:
Penetrant Testing (PT)
Penetrant Testing is used for the detection of surface breaking discontinuities on magnetic and non magnetic materials, including glass, ceramics, plastics etc.
Fluorescent and colour contrast penetrants are available to be used in the following methods:-
For special applications dual penetrants (fluorescent and colour contrast) can be obtained as can thixotropic penetrants (those with variable viscosity) for use on critical areas of on-site components.
Testing can be undertaken both in-house and on-site, working to national and international specifications including BS EN 571-1, BAE R05-6101.
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MT)
Magnetic Particle Inspection is used for the detection of surface breaking and slightly sub-surface (up to 2mm) discontinuities.
Bench type crack detectors and portable units are employed producing various waveforms (i.e. A.C, HWDC and induced magnetic flow) to give both circular and longitudinal magnetism.
On-site testing is carried out using electro magnetic yokes and permanent magnets producing induced magnetic flow. Portable units can be used where a suitable power source is available.
Indications of discontinuities are revealed using fluorescent and non fluorescent detecting media.
Testing can be undertaken in-house or on-site, working to national and international specifications including BS EN ISO 9934-1, BAE RO5-6103.
Ultrasonic Flaw Detection (UT)
Ultrasonic Flaw Detection
is used for the detection of volumetric discontinuities in welds, iron products (forgings etc.) and castings in magnetic and non magnetic materials including glass, ceramics and plastics etc.
Undertaken using digital and analogue machines capable of ‘A’ scan display at frequencies up to 6MHz employing both normal (0 degree) and angle probes. Ultrasonic flaw detection is capable of testing metals, ceramics, glass etc. up to 10m in length.
Thickness and depth checks can also be carried out using ultrasound.
Tests in-house or on-site, working to National and International specifications including BS EN 10160, BS EN 1714.
These services are available through sub-contract booked in advance. Notice is required for on-site work.
Operators are available at short notice for in-house or on-site work in the UK and overseas.
All inspectors undertaking non destructive testing (PT, MT & UT) are qualified to, and meet a minimum of, PCN Level 2.
In-house PCN Level 3 supervision is available for PT, MT, UT (welds) offering consultancy services, including procedure writing and commentary, auditing of techniques and Level 3 Supervisor cover.
Additional non-destructive processes are avaliable at Keighley Laboratories, click on the link for further details:- Additional NDT processes at KLL
