What is Normalizing?

Normalizing is a way of stabilising materials after stresses have been created during joining, forming, casting or machining operations. It is used to refine an existing microstructure, especially relevant to steels which require further processing, e.g. carburizing. It can soften, harden or stress relieve a material, depending on its initial state and chemical composition.

What Benefits does Normalizing Give?

Normalizing enhances machinability; it can be applied where strict control to mechanical strength properties are required; it helps to ensure future dimensional stability. An endothermic atmosphere to reduce scale is available for normalizing cycles on steels.

Base Material Options

Usually normalizing is carried out to ferrous materials such as steels & irons.
